The nine wineries will be offering four days of free chocolate and wine pairings to celebrate Valentine's Day. 2011 marks six years of offering chocolate and wine during February at the wineries along the Uplands Wine Trail which reaches from Bloomington on the north to the I-64 corridor on the south. The event attracts both enophiles and chocophiles alike. The best part is the event is absolutely free.

During the weekends of February 12/13 and 19/20 each winery along the trail will pair their award-winning wines with tempting chocolate treats. Dan Adams of Winzerwald Winery says the event is so popular that even snowy days during last year’s event did not hurt attendance, although he admitted “Super Bowl Sunday was a little slow since our very own Colts were playing!” “It’s a really fun weekend, whether with a group of friends or as a romantic getaway. Combined with an overnight stay at an area cabin or B&B it’s a sure cure for the winter blues,” Adams says.

Along the northern portion of the wine trail you can find Oliver Winery serving Gourmet Hand Painted Chocolate Truffles from Ghyslain Chocolatier. Butler Winery will be serving chocolate heart-shaped cups with assorted fillings and an array of brownies and chocolates. Carousel Winery will be offering decadent edible chocolate cups filled with the wine of your choice and free samples of Carousel’s own in-house produced creamy fudges. Carousel will release their Indiana Persimmon wine and offer Amish signed & dated Woven Wine Baskets to fill with the wine of your choice and a Wine-A-Rita mix or candle for a wonderful Valentine’s day gift.

Some of the offerings along the south leg of the wine trail will be Winzerwald Winery featuring their newly released Cabernet Sauvignon & Black Riesling along with their famous fruit wines and warm mulled wine with four chocolate cheesecakes: Heavenly Chocolate, Cookies & Cream, Chocolate Turtle and Raspberry White Chocolate. French Lick Winery will highlight San Francisco chocolates with your choice of wines. Best Vineyards is serving Chocolate Paté with Hazelnut gluten free crackers, Creamy peanut-butter fudge dipped in dark chocolate, Chocolate oatmeal gluten & sugar free cookies sweetened with honey, and Strawberry Flame Balls (a twist on the traditional Bourbon Balls).

Now comprised of nine wineries – Brown County, Butler, Oliver, Carousel, French Lick, Winzerwald, Turtle Run, Best and Huber – the Uplands Wine Trail was formed in 2003. Visit www.IndianaUplands.com for links to individual wineries and their event schedules. Tickets are also now on sale at the wineries for “March Gladness” March 12/13 and 19/20 the most popular of Wine Trail events pairing wines with a host of foods from entrees to desserts in a VIP atmosphere.

<link rel='related' href='http://www.indianauplands.com' title='Wine & Chocolate? Or at least I think I do. Promoting Indiana’s 52 wineries and 600 acres of grapes is truly a joy. And there is no better time of year to spread that joy than at Christmas!

Sitting in my office right now are 44 bottles of Indiana wine featuring all sorts of Christmas cheer. I’ll be travelling the state in the next few weeks using these wines on television and radio station appearances. Here’s a peek at the wine I’ll be promoting for your holiday tables!

These fun wines are from Huber’s Orchard, Winery & Vineyards, Starlight and Chateau Thomas, Plainfield. These would make great centerpieces on your table!

So my car thermometer said 0 degrees when I was driving to work. And all I could think about was a nice glass of mulled wine, even if it was 7am. These two from Easley Winery, Indianapolis and Lanthier Winery, Madison are meant to be served warm for these cold days.

Many of our wineries enjoy making festive bottles for the season. The initiative continues to position Indiana on the leading edge of wine marketing among wine associations in the U.S.

The app was created by Mobiltopia, a leading Indianapolis-based mobile app development company.

The “Indiana Winery Guide” app launched earlier this month, just ahead of the 11th annual Vintage Indiana Wine & Food Festival on June 5 at Military Park in downtown Indianapolis. The app’s introduction also celebrated June Wine Grape Month as declared by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels.

The app enables users to map local wineries, obtain directions, view photos and details about the wineries’ amenities, and travel along a wine trail. A special feature of the app showcases Traminette, Indiana’s inaugural Signature Wine, along with a listing of all wineries that offer it. Users also can mark their favorite wineries and wines for future reference when making purchasing decisions after a winery visit.

The best part? The app will be updated regularly as new wineries open their doors. The app uses a tourism-platform that Mobiltopia created specifically to power this particular app, The platform has proven so successful that it will be used by Mobiltopia to create future tourism apps.

“It’s a very flexible system, allowing us to add new features and functions,” said James Burnes, Mobiltopia’s CEO and founder. “We have several upgrades planned for the coming weeks and months as we get feedback and analytics from users.”

More information about the app is available at www.mobiltopia.com/apps/indiana-winery-guide/.

Vintage Indiana is Almost Here!

If you don't have your tickets already, run, don't walk, to your nearest Marsh Supermarket to purchase tickets for the 11th annual Vintage Indiana Wine & Food Festival! However, after saying such, I must correct myself. Indiana is home to 46 outstanding wineries and one outstanding meadery!

Mead is arguably the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage. Mead is simply the name given to wine made from honey. Mead is where Indiana's industry started, as William Oliver, Sr. was making Camelot Mead in the early 70's and decided it was time to open a winery and sell it, thus creating Oliver Winery!

And while we have a few wineries who do mead as part of their tasting lineup, we have one meadery that is making just honey wines.

New Day Meadery, Elwood, is a fascinating story. Owned by the husband and wife team of Brett Canady and Tia Agnew, New Day has focus is on using only the finest, freshest ingredients to create small, handcrafted batches that result in limited edition meads of the highest quality. They work with local beekeepers to secure their supplies of honey and turn that liquid gold into a fabulous product.

Throughout history, mead has been crafted in a variety of styles. Just like grape-based wines, mead can be made dry to sweet, still or sparkling, and with a range of alcohol contents. Mead can even be made in a style that resembles beer or hard apple cider (carbonated and with a lower alcoholic content).

The couple, both Purdue graduates, opened the Meadery in 2006. And in June of 2010 they will be moving their tasting room to Fountain Square in Indianapolis! I just visited their new location and Tia was proud to show me their permit and a tasting room that is nearing completion for customers!

Mead production will stay in Elwood and customers will be directed to Fountain Square to get their mead buying needs fulfilled.

While New Day Meadery is the only one of its kind in Indiana, there are around 60 Meaderies located throughout the United States, and 200 world-wide.

Be sure to add New Day Meadery to your list of wineries to visit this summer! You'll love the experience!

Another Indiana Winery Opens!

Indiana's wine industry keeps growing! They explained how a signature wine initiative will help boost not only Indiana agriculture and tourism, but also further advance recognition of Indiana’s rich winemaking heritage throughout the nation.

A promising hybrid grape, Traminette is a combination of Gewurztraminer and J.S. 23-416. Cornell University’s Grape Breeding Program is given credit for developing the varietal – one that is well adapted to the climate and soils of the Midwest, making it ideal for Indiana winemakers to grow. Currently, more than 20 of the state’s 43 wineries are offering their own unique take on this new signature wine.

Traminette is a palate-teaser that offers a delicious aroma and delectable fruitiness - perfect for wine aficionados in search of something new and different. It pairs beautifully with turkey or other poultry, seafood, Asian cuisine, and vegetarian dishes. According to the Indiana Wine Grape Council’s Jeanette Merritt, Traminette also is the perfect “back porch wine” for kicking back and relaxing after a long day at work or play.

“Indiana’s wine industry offers consumers the opportunity to buy local, enjoy a high-quality product, meet the local winemaker and support Indiana,” said Joe Kelsay, director of the Indiana State Department of Agriculture. “This industry also offers our Hoosier farm families a niche market to grow grapes that put to good use the rich Indiana soil typically too rocky for more traditional row crops. One of these Hoosier grapes, the Traminette, is now featured as Indiana’s first signature wine. I encourage all to “try on Traminette.”

“Traminette Trails” are in the process of being developed, noted Office of Tourism director Amy Vaughan. These will complement the very popular trio of Indiana wine trails already established. Recent figures show Indiana’s 43 wineries attract more than one million visitors annually.

“Indiana’s wine industry plays an important role in our state’s tourism industry,” said Amy Vaughan, director of the Indiana Office of Tourism Development. “From wine trails to special events, Indiana wineries offer authentic local experiences. By designating Traminette as Indiana’s signature wine, visitors have another great reason to explore Indiana wineries and taste some of their award-winning products. Indiana Tourism is pleased to join the Indiana Wine Grape Council and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture in promoting our state’s growing wine industry.”

One Indiana vintner who already is on a first-name basis with Traminette is Bill Oliver of Bloomington’s Oliver Winery. Oliver-produced Traminette picked up the “Traminette of the Year” trophy during this past summer’s Indy International Wine Competition, one of the most prestigious wine competitions in the world.

“Indiana’s winemaking legacy dates all the way back to 1802,” the Wine Council’s Jeanette Merritt noted. “Hoosiers were making wine long before California’s legendary industry even was launched. We are so fortunate to have extraordinary wineries, creating extraordinary wines.

“It was time to select one as Indiana’s signature wine - and we all believe Traminette is more than worthy of the honor.”

For additional information about Indiana’s signature wine, log on to www.TryOnTraminette.org.

A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

The Indiana Wine Grape Council is getting ready to make a major announcement. On Tuesday, the agriculture, tourism and wine industries will come together to announce something big!

Stay tuned...

Wine on the Ohio

When we open wineries in Indiana, I try to make a point to visit them quickly. I decided to make a trip to Southern Indiana to visit a few of our new ones. Blue Heron Vineyards and Winery was an outstanding experience! If you've never seen, get a copy soon. The pictures look like food porn!

The magazine features their dine Dozen, the top twelve wines from a field of 60. This month's dozen featured Oliver Winery's Valdiguie.

Bill Oliver, President and Winemaker at Oliver Winery, described the wine as "bright, fruity, and spicy. The flavor is clean, with cherries and rose, and fresh acidity. The color is ultra bright garnet. A great wine!"

At just $14 a bottle, it is also a great value. What you don't have to pay for is the experience of visiting Oliver Winery. As Indiana's oldest and largest winery, these folks know how to win over the most experienced wine expert and educate the wine novice. With their expansive wine list, you will find many reasons to take home a case or two!

Enjoy Oliver Winery's Valdiguie and discover why Indianapolis dine rank it high on their list of favorite wines!

Indiana Cabernet?

Since I said I'd post what wine was the favorite of my most recent tasting, I think I better follow through!

Of the 10 wines I poured, the first one that was gone was Ertel Cellars Winery Cabernet Sauvignon! Ertel Cellars Winery is a fairly new wineries in the Hoosier State! It is a great chance to get out and meet wine lovers! And I get great questions about our industry and wine made here in Indiana.

The latest group I served was from our State Department of Agriculture. It was nice to tell them about our industry and then let them taste samples of wine.

One of the big hits of the evening was Oliver Winery's Creekbend Chardonal. The 2007 bottling of this wine is fantastic! Chardonal is a great wine for people to try if you typically drink Chardonnay. A Chardonal grape is a hybrid of a Chardonnay and a Seybal Blanc. So if you like one of these grape wines, you'll enjoy a Chardonel.

Upon opening Oliver's Creekbend Chardonal you smell fruit. I smell a lot of pear. And when it's in your mouth you get a full-bodied big white wine. I tasted more fruit with nectarine and a bit of honey coming through

At only $15.50 a bottle, this is a great buy!

My favorite wine?

As the Marketing Director for the Indiana Wine industry, I'm often asked what is my favorite wine. OK, trying to pick a favorite would be like trying to pick a favorite child! I have no favorites!

However, I do have preferences. And when I head to my wine cellar to choose a bottle, I often pick a dry wine. My cellar doesn't have too many rose wines in it. And now there is one less.

Huber's Orchard, Winery and Vineyards produces fine vino! Every wine on their extensive wine list is great. I had the pleasure to taste their newest release, Stella di Luce, in the late spring. I loved it so much I bought a few bottles and put them away for a nice summer day.

This rose is made from grapes grown in Huber's Knobstone vineyards and represents
a blend of our Cabernet Sauvignon and Chambourcin grape varieties. The off-dry wine has plenty of fruit characterists. I would serve this with a grilled pork chop! Of course, I just enjoyed a glass after supper. And am going to have to hide this one from my husband.

Huber's is a great fall destination for the entire family. Stop by their upick pumpkin patch for the perfect Halloween carver. Visit their ice cream stand and farmer's market to find the perfect pairing for the wine. And take the kids to the petting zoo and let them experience a bit of agriculture.

Here's to a great rose from a great Indiana winery!

Grape harvest

Welcome to the Indiana Wines blog! With fall upon us, this is a great time to visit one of Indiana's award-winning 35 wineries. If you go now, you will find the wineries in the midst of grape harvest.
Indiana raises all types of grapes like Chardonnay and Cabernet. But we also do a lot of hybrids, like Chardonel, Chambourcin, Foch and Catawba. All of these varieties stand up to the cold, harsh, unpredictable Indiana winter!

Enjoy a lovely glass tonight!
